TAS Chiltern Hills Study Day 1 - THE WHOLE ART OF THE BOOK Dominic Riley Wednesday 02 October 2019

Why was the best paper made from the worn-out clothes of peasants? Why is gold leaf so thin that it is measured in atoms? Why did gold finishers get paid more than other bookbinders despite not washing their hair? And why is the art of bookbinding, surely as beguiling today as it was when it was invented on the banks of the Nile 2,000 years ago. Session 1 tells the story of the making of a traditional hand bound book. Dominic Riley, not only a valued Arts Society lecturer, but also a Fellow of Designer Bookbinders and Vice President of the society of Bookbinders.  In 2013 he won the Sir Paul Getty International bookbinding Competition, and his winning binding was acquired by the Bodleian Library.  Session 2 will be a live demonstration of bookbinding techniques.  Session 3 will be a ‘show and tell’ of interesting bindings.  The final session invites participants to bring along a book of their own they may like to discuss.

Venue  – The King’s Church, Raans Rd, Amersham HP6 6LX. (10.30am - 3.00pm)
