Art and Craft at Ditchling Museum and Standen House(NT)
Tuesday 10 July 2018

Two very different examples of the Arts and Crafts movement.

Ditchling Museum, recommended by an arts society member, is award winning for its contemporary architecture, updating a Victorian Museum in a village which captured the movement.  Eric Gill was a contemporary of William Morris and set up his own press while also evolving as an artist.  Recent controversy about him has sparked debate about how much biography should influence perceptions of aesthetic works.  There are permanent and temporary exhibitions at the museum, reflecting Arts and Crafts.

Standen House is a 1920s home with a William Morris interior.  A major attraction is the 12-acre hillside garden and woodlands.  There are outdoor ‘rooms’ and a project to restore the Arts and Crafts inspired garden.
